There are three upcoming seminars of possible interest to California appellate project panel attorneys.
Federal non-capital habeas corpus: On Friday, October 2, the Office of the Federal Public Defender Office for the Eastern District of California will present "2009 Non-Capital Habeas Seminar: Navigating One’s Way Through the Murky Waters of Habeas,” a one-day seminar at the Delta King Riverboat in Old Sacramento on federal non-capital habeas corpus law. The agenda includes an overview of litigation, parole denials, equitable and statutory tolling, hot topics, procedural default defense, discovery, evidentiary hearings, and the Confrontation Clause. CACJ 2009 Appellate Practice Seminar: This year, the CACJ appellate practice seminar will be on October 17, 2009, at the University of California - Irvine. The agenda topics include recent developments in caselaw, ethics, prosecutorial misconduct at the appellate level, substance abuse and break-out session choices of beginning an appellate practice, persuasive brief writing, the bench perspective and writ practice. Speakers include: Al Menaster, Kristin Erickson, Elaine Alexander, Jay M. Kohorn, Alice Shotton, Edward Jessen, Katharine Sloan, Justice Douglas Miller, Federal District Court Judge Stephen Larson, Gary Nichols, Lauri Ferguson, Charles Murray, Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, Martha Roof, and Hal Nevitt.
