Status of Court-Appointed Counsel Payments; Temporary Suspension of Direct Deposit Program
The Administrative Office of the Courts has issued a memorandum addressed to California court-appointed counsel announcing measures effective as early as February 1, 2009, as a result of the state's fiscal problems. If, by that date, there is no resolution of the stalement between the Governor and Legislature, the state Controller may issue warrants (i.e. IOUs) instead of checks to appointed counsel. The AOC will provide additional information as it learns which banks will honor the warrants. In addition, the warrants will be send by mail because they cannot be issued by direct deposit. For more very important details, be sure to thoroughly review the complete memorandum here.
